Go-to Scriptures for when you’re fearful or anxious

by Jocelyn on July 23, 2009

WomanreadingBibleToday I’d like to go straight to God’s Word and share with you some of my favorite verses about fear and anxiety. I’ve divided them into categories according to how you might be feeling- just find the heading below that fits you best to see what God has to say to you.

Leaning on your own strength? Trust in God instead.

“Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you” (Psalm 33:20-22).

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Feeling all alone? The Lord is with you.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God…” (Isaiah 43:1b-3a).

“The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).

“Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

Feeling fearful? Do not be afraid.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam  and the mountains quake with their surging” (Psalm 46:1-3).

“He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD” (Psalm 112:7).

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7).

Feeling anxious? Do not worry.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:27).

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me” (John 14:1).

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6).

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

Searching for peace? Find it in God alone.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4:8).

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3).

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

I discovered that verse, Zeph. 3:17, eleven years ago, and it really changed my perspective on God, which then changed my life. I am so amazed at his love for us. Really. Incredible.
