Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front!

by Jocelyn on February 11, 2011

Well, the complete manuscript of Faith Deployed . . . Again is now in the very capable hands of the Moody Publishers team-hurray! To meet all the 28 contributors, visit the Coming Soon tab at the top of this page. You’ll also see the new book cover. (Thanks again to everyone who cast a vote between two book cover options. Between the votes on the blog and those who emailed me directly, the duffel bag cover won with a 2-1 ratio, but with the caveat that we change the soldier out of his dress green uniform and put a wedding ring on his hand- so that’s what Moody did for us.)

Louisa May Alcott served as a nurse during the Civil War before she wrote Little Women.

Now that you know what’s “Coming Soon” I’d like to tell you what’s “Coming Later” for you! I am now working on a new book project with co-author Karen Whiting: Battlefields & Blessings: Stories of Faith and Courage from the Home Front will be released by AMG Publishers in November. (You may remember that I co-authored the latest book in the series as well: Battlefields & Blessings: Stories of Faith and Courage from the War in Iraq & Afghanistan.)

Karen and I are so excited about this new volume in the series because we get to tell the stories of the women (and children) at home throughout all American wars from colonial times up through the present. We have both made trips to museums, archives, and battlefields along the East Coast, in Texas, Iowa, and of course all over cyberspace. We cannot wait to share with you what we have discovered about these women who sent their loved ones to war. In many cases, they served on the front lines themselves as nurses, disguised soldiers or spies. The problem is not in finding enough material to fill the 365-day devotional book, but in choosing what to include and what we have to leave out! In addition to all the historical research, we’ll be sharing the stories of our own generations as well.

Most of you know me pretty well by now (if not, visit www.jocelyngreen.com) but I’d like to introduce you to my co-author Karen Whiting. Karen is a mother of five, a grandmother, and an author of 15 books (this one is her 16th) She is best known for the inspirational craft books known as God’s Girls with Legacy Press/Rainbow publishers (and two more of those are coming). Karen’s interest in the home front of American wars comes from personal experience and her heritage. Her husband spent 22 years as an active duty Coast Guard officer and is the mother of an Air Force officer and mother-in-law of a medically retired army serviceman. She grew up in New England, rich in history of the American Revolution. Her ancestors served in the revolution (one was even in the Coast Guards as it was called at the time). She juggled lots of family issues when her husband spent time at sea and away on orders.

Karen also had the privilege of having her oldest son’s family (with two little ones) live with her last year while her son was deployed to Iraq. That time, alas included discovering her husband’s breast cancer and other difficulties, because life at home continues when the men are gone. Her hope is this book will give people a glimpse into lives impacted by war as well as how through the ages and wars wives, parents, and children still face many of the same issues of fear, loneliness, hardships, as well as the joy of homecomings and issues related to rebuilding lives after war.

We would both appreciate your prayers as we pull this monumental book together during the next few months. It will be well worth it!
